Macy’s Buying and Digital Merchandising team has a high acumen for products and trends, and drives relationships with vendors in the marketplace. Macy’s Buying and Digital Merchandising team maximizes sales and gross margin for each product category by identifying, procuring, and assorting the products that their customer demands. The Buying and Digital Merchandising team is comprised of two important roles: Buying and Digital Merchandising.

Locations and Start Dates

Our Merchant Executive Development Program is offered at our corporate offices in New York City. Classes start throughout the year based on business need.

Training

Through this 10 week program, you will receive a thorough, hands-on introduction to the retail industry, while also diving into the technical and business skills required for your first buying or merchandising role at Macy’s. You will experience a blended learning environment with a combination of structured classroom-style learning and in-office assignments. Like our assortment, our Buying and Planning trainees are part of the same development program and experience an omnichannel learning curriculum. Beyond the Executive Development Program, you will continually have exposure to new trainings, system roll outs, and leadership development.

Impact

As a member of the Buying & Digital Merchandising team, you'll be part of the team directly responsible for the merchandise assortment offered at every Macy’s Department Store across the country, as well the macys.com site. You will be responsible for identifying and capturing trends in order to drive Macy’s business forward. Your work will be consumer-focused and analytical but will also be relationship-driven and require interpersonal skills. Roles within the Buying and Merchandising functions incorporate a wide range of business concepts including procurement, product development, site merchandising, vendor partnerships, pricing, and advertising. Each member of the Buying and Digital Merchandising team contributes to driving the business. Even as a new executive, you will complete trend analysis and make recommendations that have a direct impact on sales and profitability.

In today's omnichannel world, Merchant roles are complex and have a huge impact on the global economy. Macy's Merchant team is comprised of many important business functions including Buyers, Digital Directors and Merchandise Planners.

Buying Track

Macy’s Buying and Digital Merchandising team has a high acumen for products and trends, and drives relationships with vendors in the marketplace. Macy’s Buying and Digital Merchandising team maximizes sales and gross margin for each product category by identifying, procuring, and assorting the products that their customer demands.

Buying

Digital Merchandising

Buyers are directly responsible for the assortment selection, pricing strategy, and procurement for their product categories across all purchasing channels, including Macy’s brick-and-mortar stores and the macys.com website. Buyers work closely with their Digital Director counterpart to drive omnichannel revenue growth.

Digital Directors influence the online assortment and are directly responsible for driving site merchandising and marketing strategies to maximize online demand. The Digital Directors work closely with their Buyer counterpart to drive omnichannel revenue growth.

Merchant Executive Development Program

The Merchant Executive Development Program provides big-picture exposure to Macy's business model while also diving into to the technical and business skills required for merchant roles within our department store and online businesses. The Merchant Executive Development Program will prepare you for your first merchant role in Planning or Buying, or Digital Merchandising.

Assistant

Assistants learn the operational components of running a successful business while receiving significant exposure and development. This is a developmental role that prepares you for an Associate role.

Associate

Associates are given direct responsibility for a particular area of business within their Buyer's total category. Associates are directly responsible for the sales and profitability of their assigned area. In many cases, Associates will assume the responsibility of managing and training the Assistant Buyers. This is a developmental role that prepares you for a Buyer role.

Buyer / Digital Director

Buyers and Digital Directors are responsible for the sales and profitability of a total category of business through strategy development and execution, as well as leading and developing their team of assistants/associates.

GVP Divisional Merchandise Manager

Group Vice President / Divisional Merchandise Managers are responsible for directing the strategy and execution for a designated division of business.

EVP General Business Manager

In these senior level positions, executives direct the financial objectives, assortment, and strategy for multiple divisions of business.

Qualifications

Macy’s is looking for individuals dedicated to personal development and achieving results. You will need a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university by the time you start with us, and a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA is preferred. All majors will be considered for this opportunity.

A few of the qualities that would make an ideal candidate for the Buying and Digital Merchandising team include: demonstrated leadership skills, assertiveness, intellectual curiosity, and strong product acumen with the ability to identify trends.
