The Product Development Executive Development Program is a part of Macy’s Merchandising Group (MMG), exclusively based in New York City. Its primary responsibilities are conceptualizing, designing, sourcing, producing, selling and marketing Macy’s extensive and successful family of private brands.
As part of the team, you’ll learn every step and detail that goes into creating the next wave of private label goods. On top of that, you’ll apply sales performance, consumer trends and market needs to promote their visibility. And that’s only the beginning.

Our Product Development Executive Development Program is offered at our corporate offices in New York City. Classes start quarterly in January, April, July and October.
Through a combination of on the job and classroom learning, you will begin your career in Product Development with an interactive 3-week orientation phase focused on the Product Development Life Cycle. You will then be placed on the job, assigned a peer sponsor and on-boarded into your area. Your on-boarding sessions will include the fundamentals of Merchandising and Retail and a Business Analysis curriculum that will prepare you to analyze trends, draw conclusions and make recommendations to drive your business.
You will be part of the team responsible for conceptualizing, designing, and sourcing Macy’s private brands. Some of the exclusive brands you may be working with include: Charter Club, Club Room, Thalia, Material Girl, Children’s Epic Threads, Alfani, Style & Co., Tools of the Trade, American Rag, Bar III, Jenni, Ideology, Home Hotel Collection, and The Cellar. As an Executive Development Program trainee, you will have the opportunity to learn from industry experts who will teach you how to develop, source, negotiate, produce and sell a specific brand classification within the total Private Brand Business. In this role, you’ll learn to identify emerging trends, conceptualize branded styles, partner with our overseas offices and work with global and domestic vendors to create the next assortment of private label product.
As a trainee in the Executive Development Program, you will interact with cross functional roles including buying/planning, store management, marketing, design, fashion research, and color analysis. At the conclusion of your first year, you will create a Career Development Plan to help you drive your own development and prepare you for your next steps. Private Brands are product lines that are manufactured exclusively for a specific retailer. Macy's has an awesome Private Brands team that works to identify new product opportunities and ensure we offer a wide range of private label products that are trend right and available to our stores and online customers at the right price, place, and time they need them.
Product Development Executives work closely with our overseas and domestic partners to manage the total production process - from designing to sourcing to costing - of our Private Label goods. Product Development executives possess a strong balance of trend awareness and business savvy to adapt to our consumer's changing needs.
During this 18-month layered development program, you’ll learn the fundamentals of conceptualizing, designing, sourcing, producing, selling and marketing our highly successful Private Brands; your training will supplement hands-on experience with multiple and varied training opportunities.
Assistants learn the operational components of running a successful business while receiving significant exposure and development. This is a developmental role that prepares you for an Associate role.
Associates are given direct responsibility for a particular category within their team's total product line. In many cases, Associates will assume the responsibility of managing and training the Assistants. This is a developmental role that prepares you for a Product Manager role.
Product Managers are responsible for the sales and profitability of a total category of business through strategy development and execution, as well as leading and developing their team of assistants/associates.
Director level is responsible for providing leadership driving and managing the Private Brand business and direct MMG Product Teams in the line development.
Vice Presidents are responsible for directing the strategy and execution for a designated division of business.
In these senior level positions, executives direct the financial objectives, product development, and strategy for multiple divisions of business.
We are seeking someone with a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university with a preferred cumulative GPA of 3.0.
Additional qualities we find in ideal candidates include the demonstrated ability to promote teamwork, solve problems, and manage complex relationships. Our executives exhibit high standards and accountability; take pride in details and accuracy, possess strong presentation skills and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
In addition, strong business acumen with the ability to analyze data and draw conclusions is a key success factor. Proficiency in MS Office and excellent Excel skills are critical.
