Internships Jobs

A Macy’s Design internship puts you at the forefront of corporate private brand design. And with our growing collection of successful lines, that’s just where you want to be.

You’ll work as an integral part of a Macy’s Design team, with a focus on a specific product line. As you might expect, in this program you’ll learn the design process in the scope of product development. In addition, Macy’s Design interns regularly communicate with overseas offices as well as coordinate with the global vendor community and merchant partners for private brand line development strategy.

But, just as important to your future, you’ll sharpen your presentation, communications and time management skills, too. All while refining your business acumen.

Locations and Start Dates

Our Design Summer Internship is offered at our corporate offices in New York City. Classes start in June.

Professional development begins on day one with a combination of structured classes and in-office experiences. During the 8-week paid internship you will work with business partners on your assigned team as well as other key executives across the organization. The structured all-intern sessions will give you an opportunity to network with 100+ headquarter interns while learning about retail innovation and Macy’s big-picture business strategies. You will complete a collaborative group project and present your recommendation to key leaders. At the end of the eight weeks, you will receive performance feedback from your assigned team and leave the internship program with a greater understanding of how you, the Designer, impacts Macy’s success.

As a Design intern, you will have the opportunity to learn and make an impact from the start. Working with a team of design and product experts, you will gain exposure to areas such as: material selection, color palettes, patterns and prints, sourcing, and production. You will learn the importance of collaboration across teams to drive sales and profitability. At the end of the eight weeks you will leave the internship program with a greater understanding of the Product Life Cycle from concept to customer.

Career Growth

This is your opportunity to join an organization dedicated to developing its employees and providing executives with the necessary tools to be successful. In addition to learning about Macy’s Private Brands, the internship will provide you with exposure to Macy’s total business model and determine where your skill sets are best matched. The goal at the end of the eight-weeks is to provide full time job offers to interns who demonstrate the understanding and ability to deliver results within the organization.

What is Product Design?

Design teams manage the initial concept and interpretation of our Private Label brand direction. Design works hand in hand with Product Development teams to identify the “white space” within our stores in order to provide the Macy’s customer with brands and product exclusive to our stores.

Private Brand

Private Brands are product lines that are manufactured exclusively for a specific retailer. Macy's has an awesome Private Brands team that works to identify new product opportunities and ensure we offer a wide range of private label products that are trend right and available to our stores and online customers at the right price, place, and time they need them.

Product Development Executive Development Program

Design trainees participate in the Product Development Executive Development Program. During this 18-month layered development program, you’ll learn the fundamentals of conceptualizing, designing, sourcing, producing, selling and marketing our highly successful Private Brands; your training will supplement hands-on experience with multiple and varied training opportunities.

Design Assistant

Assistants are responsible for assisting in interpreting the Private Brand label’s direction into materials, trims, styles, colors and patterns. This development prepares the executive for an Associate level role.

Design Associate

Associates are given the direct responsibility for the design, development, selection, and approval of materials, trims, silhouettes, colors and patterns for given category of business. This development prepares the executive for a Manager level role in design.

Designer / Manager

Designers are given the direct responsibility for creating designs for Private Label brands and develop trend strategies that support merchant objectives and the Macy’s brand; as well as leading and developing their team of assistant/associates.

Design Director

Direct all aspects of Private Brand design, development, selection and approval of materials, silhouettes, colors and patterns for the season while adhering to the brand strategy. Direct and manage the entire Design Team for the area of responsibility.

Macy’s is looking for the future leaders of our organization and individuals dedicated to their development.
